NHL Top Plays and Value Options: Wednesday, March 04, 2015

I know not all of our followers live in the Northeast United States, but I just have to give a shout out to the big man upstairs for sending us this 34 degree heatwave! I actually considered taking off my sweatshirt while I had the window rolled down this afternoon.

I’d be willing to bet that NHL teams are begging to play out west this winter season. The snow and cold has been over the top this winter. Here in Rochester, we officially experienced our coldest month in recorded history. That isn’t as fun as it sounds, trust me.

One team gets the glory of traveling out west, and southwest at that, but the struggle will be real. Montreal takes on Anaheim in our heavyweight bout of the night. You’d be taking a big gamble playing guys like Max Pacioretty or Ryan Getzlaf in that one. The goaltending will be on and both teams will be out to prove their dominance over the other.

Have no fear, though! There are three other games before that one, so you might be able to fill out your lineup, enjoy the first three games, and then kick back and enjoy some hockey while you count your winnings.

It’s going to be a good night! I can feel it!

Here are my top plays and value options at each position for tonight’s contests!

Top G: Carey Price / MON-G / $22,363

We are watching a nearly historic season from Carey Price, so I don’t really care who the competition is tonight. If you can get away with playing him in a tournament at his price, you may be the only one to do it. Sneaky, sneaky!

Value G: Andrew Hammond / OTT-G / $16,415

The story is that Craig Anderson didn’t “feel comfortable” enough this morning to make his first start back from injury. I think he just realizes he can’t outdo Hammond right now. Consider the fact that Hammond is playing on back to back nights, however.

Top LW: Rick Nash / NYR-LW / $16,166

Aside from the fact that he can score almost any night, Nash has a goal in each of the two games against Detroit so far this season. He is expensive for a reason.

Value LW: Jiri Tlusty / WPG-LW / $6,828

If the lineup stays the same, Tlusty will be on the second line with Scheifele and Stafford. The Jets are looking to deepen their roster, however, so check back to make sure he stays put. He has averaged just under 16 minutes in his first two games with the Jets and has one assist.

Top RW: Patric Hornqvist / PIT-RW / $13,000

This is one of the more affordable positions out there tonight. Hornqvist has been great this season in Pittsburgh on the top line with Crosby and Perron. As for the two guys ahead of him in terms of salary, Corey Perry is going to run into a wall in Carey Price and Blake Wheeler has been shuffled down to the third line.

Value RW: Devante Smith-Pelly / MON-RW / $6,000

His return to Anaheim comes quickly, but Devante Smith-Pelly should see some power play time tonight. I am sure he will want to show his former team that he is going to be sorely missed.

Top C: Sidney Crosby / PIT-C / $15,227

This is going to be a tough call for most tonight. The center position is loaded with top level talent from Crosby and Malkin to Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Crosby is on a roll lately with six points in his last four games. Let’s hope Semyon Varlamov can’t stop a beach ball tonight.

Value C: Lars Eller / MON-C / $6,000

Eller is on the second line for the Habs with Tomas Plekanec and Alex Galchenyuk. The opportunities will be there it is simply a matter of cashing in on them.

Top D: Erik Karlsson / OTT-D / $12,000

The Speedy Swede is having a great second half to the season. He is worth consideration every night at the max defensive salary. He is probably worth 13-14k.

Value D: Tobias Enstrom / WPG-D / $6,737

He may not take a ton of shots, but he is on the top power play unit and could wind up distributing the puck to a scorer. Or maybe he will start shooting. One or the other is all we need Toby!
