Vancouver Canucks v Calgary Flames

NHL Top Plays and Value Options: Thursday, March 05, 2015

I haven’t been doing this very long. There are many writers and DFS fanatics out there who have much more experience than I do. I don’t deny that and would have no reason to deny it. I like to think that I am learning along the way, however, and that is equally important to experience in the DFS realm.

One thing I have learned is that, on a larger slate, you have to be willing to mix things up a bit. You don’t have to enter five or six lineups, but having two isn’t a bad idea. It will allow you to take advantage of tournaments with a chance lineup as well as to take advantage of your double up contests.

We can’t all be right 100% of the time.

Here are my ideas for who the top play will be at each position as well as a value option you can use to offset the high salaries of the top players! Good luck and have fun!

Top G: Brian Elliott / STL-G / $17,494

What a night to pick a goaltender! I think most people will be utilizing the value options tonight, but Elliot makes for a good choice at the price. The Flyers really only have a few players who can score, so let’s hope they don’t tonight!

Value G: Eddie Lack / VAN-G / $13,762

Everybody and their mother will have Lack in tonight, so you may have to change things up if you are in a larger tournament. The matchup is just too good to pass up in most cases though.

Top LW: Jamie Benn / DAL-LW / $14,577

With Dan Ellis between the pipes in Florida, I expect Benn and Jason Spezza to be heavily owned and for good reason.

Value LW: Chris Higgins / VAN-LW / $7,633

Playing on the second line usually gives you enough credit at this salary range. Higgins has a plus matchup in Arizona tonight.

Top RW: Vladimir Tarasenko / STL-RW / $15,479

Steve Mason is back in net, but I don’t care. The Blues can score and Tarasenko is the main man in St. Louis.

Value RW: Ales Hemsky / DAL-RW / $6,511

I thought about Zack Kassian here, and he is certainly worth considering, but Hemsky is a proven scorer. The opportunities will be there.

Top C: John Tavares / NYI-C / $15,581

Last time these two teams played, Johnny T. had a goal and an assist. I feel confident that it was no fluke and Nashville is reeling the past few games.

Value C: Ryan Spooner / BOS-C / $6,000

While he certainly isn’t the focal point in the offense, he is a solid value play based on his ice time. Last game he logged over 17 minutes. That is a ton for a replacement to David Krejci.

Top D: Victor Hedman / TB-D / $10,371

Jonathan Bernier is a great goaltender but I have a good feeling about Hedman tonight. The Lightning are in need of a strong run and Hedman is a big part of the equation down in Tampa.

Value D: Aaron Ekblad / FLA-D / $8,372

I know this isn’t very far down the value pole, but just because Florida could potentially get shelled tonight, that doesn’t mean Kari Lehtonen is going to stop the puck. Ekblad is the man.
