NHL Top Plays and Value Options: Monday, March 09, 2015

I mentioned earlier how much I like the nice, neat schedule the NHL has given us to work with in tonight’s daily games. Well, that hasn’t changed, but a few outlooks may have. We will see how things shake out, but it looks like we will have a couple of backup goalies in net to deal with as well.

The initial reaction, particularly if you are new to DFS contests, is that when a backup is in net, all systems are go for the opposition. That just isn’t the case, unfortunately.

Consider the mindset a backup goalie is in when they take the net. If you are thinking they feel intimidated, nervous, or even downright scared, you just don’t know the game very well. A backup in the NHL is more than likely a stud in the minor leagues. The guy can play, let’s just put it that way.

But what if he is an AHL call up? Surely that must mean fantasy gold, right?

Two words: Andrew Hammond.

Hammond dispatched any cockeyed theory that AHL goalies are easy to pick on. The kid has single handedly forced Ottawa back into the playoff picture with an unbelievable string of wins after being called up from the AHL a little less than a month ago.

So with Michal Neuvirth and Louis Domingue already confirmed as the starters for the Islanders and Coyotes respectively, I think the value in goal tonight is great. The risk is clear, but the reward is great. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite plays tonight!

Top G: Frederik Andersen / ANH-G / $17,888

With the way the Predators have been playing, I’m not paying up for Pekka Rinne even if his salary has dropped nearly $1,500 in the past two weeks. Andersen has been great against the Canucks this season, so I will be using him in my heads up and double up contests tonight.

Value G: Louis Domingue / ARI-G / $11,000

It looks crazy initially, but it might not be overall. Domingue has a 2.26 GAA and a .910 save percentage in three NHL appearances this season. What’s more? The Predators have lost six straight games. The timing is perfect, but don’t be overzealous. This is a huge risk.

Top LW: Tomas Tatar / DET-LW / $11,732

Quiet night for left wingers, but Tatar definitely stands out. Edmonton gives up goals in bunches, so let’s hope Detroit can take advantage tonight.

Value LW: Justin Abdelkader / DET-LW / $9,439

To the same effect, I am not reaching very far down for value tonight. Abdelkader has been solid this season and plays on the power play fairly frequently. I feel more comfortable with him than Tatar to be honest.

Top RW: Patric Hornqvist / PIT-RW / $13,051

Pittsburgh is playing well on their road trip with the exception of their loss to the Avalanche. Hornqvist is a solid top choice tonight and has a valuable salary to boot.

Value RW: Jakob Silfverberg / ANH-RW / $8,225

As long as he remains in the top six, he will be a solid value play. Silfverberg has been productive since being moved up in the pecking order.

Top C: Evgeni Malkin / PIT-C / $15,870

Geno is having himself a nice little time lately with the Pens. Until Saturday, he had a seven game point streak that saw a total of 14 points over that span. San Jose isn’t scaring anybody.

Value C: Riley Sheahan / DET-C / $6,407

Call me crazy, but I like the role players in Detroit tonight. Sheahan gets a run on the power play even though he is on the third line. Edmonton isn’t good enough to steer me clear of some value plays.

Top D: Kris Letang / PIT-D / $12,000

Did I mention I like the Penguins tonight?

Value D: Nick Leddy / NYI-D / $7,011

Ever since signing that fat extension, Leddy has been solid as a value play. Even though Jonathan Bernier has been playing well for the Leafs, I still expect the Isles to put a few in the net tonight. Leddy should get some time on the power play as well.
