Five games tonight!
If you know me, you know I like a midrange slate like this. Five or six games is ideal, seven is okay, but anything over that can be daunting and can introduce outside factors that we just don’t want to deal with.
Hopefully you’ve had a chance to read up on the morning skate and you are ready to jump into some top plays for tonight. If you aren’t, head over to blog.starfantasyleagues.com and get yourself in the game!
Tonight is tough one even though we have an ideal slate. You’re going to have to be a bit risky at the goaltending position because a lot of these matchups feature difficult decisions. Andrew Hammond is hot, but he is both expensive and facing a great offensive team. Devan Dubnyk has been on fire, but can you trust him against the top team in the NHL? All questions we need answers to!
Let’s attempt to go through our list and identify the top players at each position tonight!
Top G: Sergei Bobrovsky / CLS-G / $17,432
Normally, I don’t pick against Edmonton and if you need a good reason why I do that, just look at last night. However, when Bobrovsky is on, he is on. Last night, he shut down the Detroit Red Wings while facing over 40 shots. That qualifies as a great performance to me.
Top LW: Alex Ovechkin / WAS-LW / $17,000
It may seem comical that I keep selecting Ovie as the top play at left wing, but have I been wrong yet? When Alexander the Great decides to conquer a scoring title, no one can stand in his way.
Top RW: Jiri Hudler / CGY-RW / $11,686
Hudler looks like a bit of a value play, but trust me he is on a roll right now. He has nine points in his last five games and what is even better is that the Leafs are starting James Reimer and his 3.18 GAA. Light the lamp!
Top C: Nicklas Backstrom / WAS-C / $13,119
He is listed as the number four center tonight, but I think he has the best matchup on the board. Kari Lehtonen can’t stop a beach ball and Backstrom has the benefit of playing with the game’s most prolific goal scorer.
Top D: Dennis Wideman / CGY-D / $10,618
Wideman has done an excellent job taking over as Calgary’s top defenseman since Mark Giordano went down with a torn biceps tendon. He is coming off a three assist game against the Ducks and, as I indicated before, the Leafs are starting James Reimer.
Value G: Jonas Hiller / CGY-G / $15,219
Toronto is tanking and the Flames should be in for a nice win tonight. Hiller might face a solid number of shots too, so he will need to be sharp, but this one should be an easy win.
Value LW: Lance Bouma / CGY-LW / $7,340
Bouma has been cold the past few games, but the ice time is there and he is still shooting the puck. I hope the flood gates open early and often tonight because Bouma will see his share of chances on goal.
Value RW: Patrick Eaves / DAL-RW / $7,134
Tough call because the Stars are on a back to back, but Eaves is on the top power play unit with the big boys. He is also coming off a nice performance last night that saw him garner a goal and an assist.
Value C: Marcus Johansson / WAS-C / $8,144
I like to target the top power play unit for the Caps and that is just where Johansson finds himself these days. He also landed himself on the top line with Ovie and Backstrom. All signs are pointing in the right direction for Mr. Marcus.
Value D: Lubomir Visnovsky / NYI-D / $5,532
I am probably going to catch some flak for this pick, but with Leddy out, Visnovsky will pick up the extra ice time. He has also been shooting a lot more, with eight shots on goal in the last three games. Being on the first power play doesn’t hurt too much either.
