MLB Game of the Day – New York Yankees Vs. Baltimore Orioles
The New York Yankees come into their weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles trailing their opponents by a full game. The two teams have been leapfrogging each other for second place in the American League East division over the last month or two. During that time, the second place team has generally held one of the two Wild Card playoff spots.
The Yankees will have David Phelps (5-4, 4.01 ERA) out on the mound on Friday, as the Yankees will try to snap their recent two-game losing streak. Phelps faced Baltimore once already this season, but came out of the game with a no-decision after only four innings of work. Overall, Phelps has faced the Orioles six times in his career (two times as a starter), and holds a 1-0 record with a 4.24 ERA.
The Orioles currently hold one of the two American League Wild Card spots, along with the Oakland Athletics. In the American League East division, they lead the Yankees by a game, but trail the Boston Red Sox by 3.5 games.
Baltimore will send rookie T.J. McFarland (1-0, 4.14 ERA) to the mound, looking for his second win on the season. McFarland’s longest outing of the season came in his last appearance, pitching 4.1 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. His only win on the year came on June 13 when he worked an inning of relief against the Red Sox. The rookie faced the Yankees in his second appearance of the season on April 14 and pitched two innings of one-hit ball.
The Yankees and Orioles have played against each other twice so far this year, with each team taking one of the series two-games-to-one. As a result, they have each won three games against the other, with this weekend’s series acting as a tie-breaker for the time being.
